The Foundation of Health

Digestive health is the key to overall health. Without a healthy digestive system, it is not possible to fully absorb vitamins and minerals. Each body system, beyond the obvious digestive system, requires a specific vitamin/mineral formula for optimal functioning. Without absorbing that formula, the system breaks down over time resulting in illness, disease, and poor health. This can mean something as simple as the common cold or something far more severe. For instance, cancer patients should be on a strong probiotic to help counter the effects of chemotherapy which wipes out the immune system.


The foundation for good digestive health starts with a solid probiotic and I don't mean yogurt!  A choice probiotic often comes in encapsulated form and requires refrigeration. (There are chewable probiotics available when needed. This is a nice option if you have difficulty taking capsules, are a child, or are traveling and don't have refrigeration.) Probiotics populate the gut with good bacteria and helps with weight management efforts. 


Some clients have said they don't feel any different from using a probiotic. This is because probiotics are preventative. You may only notice the difference if you do not continue on the regimen. Immune illnesses may pop up more frequently. Migraine headaches may occur more often. Depression and irritability may seem more intense. The list goes on!


Probiotics are also essential for anyone with irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's, colitis, diverticulitis, etc. 


For best results, take before bedtime. Get your children in the routine of taking probiotics too!

Anxiety

Throughout my time as a medical intuitive, one of the most poignant mental conditions I have seen is anxiety. It has the propensity to stagnate living. As I write this, the comedy, What About Bob? comes to mind. In the film, Bill Murray plays the debilitated patient of a psychiatrist (Richard Dreyfuss) who fears everything from touching doorknobs to fear of "catching" turrets syndrome. Bob's fears are so extreme and numerous that it borders on ludicrous, but then again, it's a comedy. Luckily, they resolve it through therapy...but not really.


Most people that suffer from anxiety have certain triggers that set them off. If those triggers cannot be avoided, as is usually the case, most people turn to pharmaceuticals. Unfortunately, when I see someone, in session, who is on anti-anxiety or anti-depressants, I pick it up immediately. The drugs truly have a feel to them. It does something to the aura (energy body around the physical body.) That person feels drugged to me - spaced-out. If it doesn't feel good to me I can only imagine how that person feels.


There is hope! Nature has provided plants that have mood-altering capabilities without the harsh side-effects. Zembrin (sceletium tortuosum) is a plant native to South Africa that literally means "something to chew." It has been used for thousands of years and is known to alleviate anxiety without drowsiness. Additionally, it is known for reducing both pain and hunger.


As is almost always the case, this plant works best in conjunction with other herbs. Consider the herbal formula, AnxiousLess. It is a non-habit forming concoction that includes: zembrin, L-theanine, thiamin, magnesium, and zinc. One pill a day usually does the trick and is safe for children over 12 years of age. Sleep

Sleep issues seem to be very common, but without enough sleep, the body cannot properly repair itself. In fact, sleep is so important that children will not grow as they should if they don't get enough rest.

Here are some simple supplements to consider if you have difficulty either falling asleep or staying asleep. 

  • Melatonin 3 - 6 mg/per night (should not be taken during the day or if pregnant/lactating). Melatonin is a natural hormone produced by the pineal gland and regulates sleep patterns. It is also a powerful antioxidant and is used in anti-aging therapy. Interestingly, it is said to help with inflammation and certain cancers. It reduces jet lag.

Start with melatonin and if that doesn't seem like enough, add one or both of the following:

  • Passion Flower - this soothes nerves and relaxes muscles. (Can be taken during the day with a meal.)
  • Valerian Root - facilitates feelings of calm and reduces anxiety. (Can be taken during the day with a meal.)
If you prefer not to experiment too much with the above secondary herbs, try the Herbal Sleep Formula. It contains: passion flower, valerian root, and hops. Consider starting with one capsule but two capsules might be necessary with more challenging sleep issues.

Menopausal Symptoms

Did you know...

that menopausal symptoms such as vaginal dryness and hot flashes can be eliminated through the simple herb known as valerian root? To no surprise, this information for those two specific reasons, came to me in a dream. Guess what? My clients can confirm the effectiveness of this potent plant. Valerian root is also known in the mainstream for reducing: insomnia, anxiety, restlessness, stress, depression, and dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation).

Other issues that may be lessened with the consumption of valerian root include: ADHD, chronic fatigue syndrome, and even hypochondria. Overall, valerian root calms down the nervous system.

Valerian root, alone, is usually sufficient to eliminate vaginal dryness, but for reduction and/or elimination of hot flashes, add sage.

Varicose Veins

that varicose veins are a visible sign of a circulatory system in need of care? When veins lose their elasticity due to age, pregnancy, sitting or standing for long periods of time, obesity, family history, and hormone replacement drugs, unsightly varicose veins pop out of the legs. In a nutshell, blood flow must work against gravity to cycle back to the heart. This becomes difficult for the body if the arteries aren't "clean" or elastic enough to handle the task.


Varicose veins can be painful and in some cases may cause blood clots, bleeding, and even ulcers.

Facial Lines/Stretch Marks

...that facial lines and stretch marks don't have to be a given just because you're a few years older than you used to be! Nowadays, a general visit to a dermatologist for a simple mole/freckle check-up opens the door to a plethora of pharmaceutical products to reduce facial lines, age marks, sun spots, and stretch marks. You may be tempted to jump on the Rx train. After all, it seems like a quick fix, doesn't it? To no surprise, those drugs all have side-effects and may not necessarily work well, anyway. Think about Botox. Did you know that it is a neuro-toxin? Why go down the dark Rx road for a simple beauty regimen?


Instead, nature has provided us a bounty of Omega 6 essential fatty acids, specifically gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), that supports the skin, promotes shinier hair, reduces PMS and menopausal symptoms, helps clear eczema and psoriasis. Additionally, it assists with reduction in blood pressure, cholesterol, blood clot formation, and improved brain function. Not bad!


GLA is naturally found in evening primrose oil, black current seed oil, borage seed oil, grapeseed oil, and sunflower oil. Hair Color Retention

...that hair color does not have to gray with age? Sage is an herb that serves multiple purposes, especially when it comes to aging issues, such as: retaining hair color, promoting skin elasticity, and reduces/eliminates night sweats and hot flashes. Sage also improves circulation, memory, concentration, and encourages hair growth. It is easiest to take in encapsulated form. 

It really does work! Who says you are supposed to lose your good looks?

Sage also reduces perspiration and should NOT be used during breast-feeding since it may reduce milk production. It is NOT recommended during pregnancy.

Sinus Congestion

Did you know?

...that sinus issues are typically caused by improper food intake?  Over the last decade, I have found repetitively that sinus congestion is predominately due to dairy consumption. Humans are not meant to consume cow's milk; it is the wrong type of protein. Undigested protein (found in cheese, milk, ice cream, yogurt, and coffee creamer) causes mucus to trap allergens. Basically, the sinus cavities become like a dam overflowing. There is nowhere for it to go, so it causes pressure in the face and head, difficulty getting air in through the nose,sneezing, and possibly runny nose.


Instead, try almond, coconut, or rice-based products. Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Earth Fare, and Heinens (in the Cleveland area) are some of the best grocery stores to find alternative foods. Almond, coconut, soy, and rice milks are typically sold in an unrefrigerated isle. Giant Eagle, Aldi, and Marcs also have some products. Once the product is opened, it must be refrigerated. Some of the best frozen treats are almond and coconut "ice cream." Yes, they do cost more, so consume one scoop instead of a bowl.  Your waist-line will thank you.


Within two weeks, it is likely you will find headaches diminishing. Sleep will come easier. AND...there is no need for steroids. (Flonase, etc.)

Mineral Deficiency

Signs of mineral deficiency are broad and may come as a surprise when you read the following list:
  • loss of hair or dry hair
  • restless leg or the inability to relax (especially at night)
  • grinding teeth
  • angry outbursts/road rage
  • panic attacks
  • kidney stones
Luckily, many of these symptoms can be alleviated or even solved through consuming the missing minerals. Sometimes, however, adding the missing minerals just isn't enough.

What impairs mineral absorption?
  • lack of hydrochloric acid
  • vitamin D deficiency
  • too much phosphoric acid (soft drinks/pop)
  • high animal protein intake, including dairy
Hydrochloric acid is naturally found in the stomach and is used to break down proteins. This is probably the most difficult issue, of the four listed above, to solve. It is essential to consume proteins easiest to digest via your blood type. For instance, Blood Type A's don't digest beef well and ought to avoid it. Here's a quick list.   • Blood Type A - chicken, turkey, salmon, yellow perch, tuna
  • Blood Type B - lamb, venison, beef, liver, turkey veal , cod, flounder
  • Blood Type O - beef, lamb, liver, veal, chicken, turkey, salmon
  • Blood Type AB - lamb, turkey, liver, tuna, salmon, cod
Be sure to consume both probiotics and food enzymes to help the stomach acid do its job. Remember, if you aren't digesting your food properly, you cannot be absorbing minerals and vitamins.

Synchronicity

Just the other day, a client (I'll call her Anne), arrived for a session. She had just lost her beloved dog two weeks earlier. Tragically, she had to put him to sleep as it was the most humane choice. Anne was grief stricken--her pup was her baby--part of the family. It seemed so unfair. At the heart of it all, the question arises...why? Usually those tough questions don't get answered.

Here's where the synchronicity comes into play.  I had to put my little sweetheart to sleep, too. The very same day! Anne knew she needed to see me; there was a sense of urgency. However, I had not revealed my loss to anyone but family. My point? Anne didn't know our "coincidence" until she arrived.

Isn't that amazing how the Universe arranged that synchronicity? It was no accident.

I remember when we bought my girl from a breeder. We were supposed to get a puppy, but the dog had lost her litter. The breeder asked, "Would you like instead, the mother? Her name is Monet."

"Monet--her name is Monet?" Goosebumps arose on my arms. Physical signs never lie. My favorite artist of all time! Claude Monet is all over my office. I literally cannot get enough of his work. He moves my soul. Little did I know at the time, but the little Bichon Frise known as Monet would move me, too. She was more human than canine. I'd lasso the moon for her.

I'm sure you can relate to other instances in your life... Running into that person you miss...the phone ringing when you needed to hear from someone...an opportunity when all seemed lost...an offer for assistance when you felt as if no one cared...a smile from a stranger that warmed your heart.

Those are the kinds of wonderful synchronicities we could never plan even if we tried.
